Is Strength Training Safe for Kids Who Play Sports?

The short answer

Strength training is safe for a young athlete when it is supervised and technique comes before load, and the fear about stunted growth and growth plates is not what the research shows.

Strength training is safe for a young athlete when two things are true: someone qualified is watching, and technique comes before load. That is the real answer, and the research behind it is strong. The worry that lifting stunts a child's growth or damages the growth plates is not what the evidence shows.

Fall sports just started across Colorado, and I hear the same question from parents every year. Their kid is nine, or twelve, or fourteen, a coach says the child should get stronger, and somewhere they heard lifting is dangerous for a growing body. It is a fair question that deserves a real answer, not a slogan.

Is strength training safe for a young athlete?

Yes, in the setting that matters. When kids train with proper technique under qualified supervision, injury rates are lower than in the sports they already play and lower than recess at school. That is the finding of the American Academy of Pediatrics: kids and adolescents can build strength at low injury rates when the emphasis is on proper technique and the work is well supervised.

The numbers back it up. In one prospective study that tracked more than 1,500 injuries in young people, resistance training accounted for about 0.7 percent of them. Football accounted for roughly 19 percent, basketball about 15, and soccer about 2. The barbell is not what sends kids to the training room. The sports they lift to get better at send far more.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association reached the same place: a properly designed and supervised program is relatively safe for youth, and there is no sound safety reason to keep a child out of one. Relatively safe, not zero, not risk-free. No good coach promises a kid will never get hurt. Done right, strength training is one of the safer things your child does all week.

Does lifting stunt growth or hurt the growth plates?

This is the fear underneath all the others. Appropriately designed resistance training has not been shown to harm a child's growth or the growth plate. The research finds that training does not influence growth in height and weight in younger and early-adolescent kids, and that injury to the growth cartilage has not been reported in any prospective study of youth resistance training. There is no evidence that it stunts growth. There is evidence, gathered over decades, that it does not.

The scare stories are not made up. Growth plate injuries tied to lifting do show up in the older medical literature. But when researchers looked at where they came from, the pattern held: they happened during unsupervised lifting, poor technique, or maximal attempts, not during age-appropriate training that was properly coached. They came from bad form and bad program design, not from a barbell touching a young body.

One caveat: while a child is still growing, explosive contractions where muscle attaches to bone can raise the risk of an avulsion fracture, until they get closer to skeletal maturity. That risk lives in play and sport as much as in lifting; a hard cut or a bad landing can do it. It is why a young athlete does not start with maximal or explosive loading. The start is the movement, learned well, with load added slowly. Safety and method are the same argument here.

When is a kid ready to start?

Readiness is not a birthday. The marker is whether a child is mature enough to follow directions, and whether they have the balance and body control to hold a position on request. As a rough guide, a kid who is ready for organized sport, usually around age seven or eight, is ready for some form of age-appropriate strength work. Your nine to fourteen year old clears that easily.

So the question is not how old, it is how ready. Older does not mean heavier: a twelve year old who has never trained starts where a younger beginner does, learning to move well before anything gets loaded.

What does a proper start look like?

A proper start looks similar for almost every young athlete. They learn each movement correctly with little or no load, and load goes up only after the movement is sound. Three things carry a good youth program, and none is a piece of equipment: real instruction in proper form, real supervision, and load scaled to the individual child rather than to a number or a bigger kid.

Where a nine year old and a fourteen year old differ is not whether they train, it is what the training is. For a younger kid, the work is mostly movement skill and play: learning to squat, hinge, push, pull and land with body weight, building coordination while it comes easily. For a teenager who is ready, structured resistance training with real progression begins, built on that same technique-first foundation.

Does strength work help in their sport, or is it just safe?

Safe is the floor, not the reason to do it. The biggest number in this area gets misquoted a lot. A meta-analysis of injury prevention in youth athletes found that structured neuromuscular training cut lower-body injuries by about 42 percent. Those programs are not lifting alone. They combine strength work with balance, jumping, speed and agility drills, coached together and done consistently. A barbell alone does not produce that 42 percent. Coached, structured training that includes strength work protects young athletes, and it protects them a lot.

The benefits stack up from there. Resistance training in adolescent athletes has been shown to reduce injuries, and preseason conditioning that includes it significantly cut serious knee injuries in adolescent girls. Childhood and adolescence is a bone-building window, and regular strength training is a potent stimulus for building bone. Appropriately designed programs also improve strength, motor skill and overall physical performance. A stronger, more coordinated kid who is harder to injure is the point of long-term athletic development, and none of it requires pushing a young body to its limit.

What should I look for in whoever coaches my kid?

If safety comes down to one thing, it is qualified supervision plus proper technique. That is your first checklist item, ahead of any machine, app, or program name. The research is consistent that injuries happened when kids were unsupervised, or supervised by someone unqualified to coach the lift. Someone has to be watching who knows what a good rep looks like.

That is why the room matters. Supervised training with a low instructor-to-participant ratio is relatively safe, and a crowded room with one adult trying to watch everyone is not coaching. Ask who is watching your child, and whether they can coach the movement or only count the reps.

The last thing is individualization. A sound program scales the load to your child, not to a fixed number and not to what a bigger teammate is doing. A coach who cannot tell them apart is running a template, and a template cannot watch a growth spurt change the way a kid moves.

What this looks like when I coach it

I coach standards, not workouts, and with a young athlete the standard is simple to say and takes patience to hold. I teach the movement before I load it, with body weight first, and I add a weight only once the pattern is clean. I scale the load to the kid in front of me, not to a number on a chart, and I add it slowly. I keep real eyes on the lift, because supervision is the thing the safety rests on.

I get to know the athlete and what their sport asks of them, design the work around that, and track it week to week to see the standard hold as the load climbs. The through-line is the same at both ends: earn the movement, then load it.

I coach individuals, families, and teams. You are not asking whether strength training is safe in general, you are asking whether it is safe for your kid. As with starting any sport, a medical question about your own child belongs with your pediatrician. The rest of it, the movement, the supervision, the slow and steady loading, is coaching, and it is the part I hold to a standard.

The risk is poor coaching, not the barbell

Strength training is not the risk to your child. Poor coaching is. Done with proper technique, real supervision, and load added slowly, strength work is one of the safest and most useful things a young athlete can do, and the fear that it stunts their growth does not hold up. Start them by teaching them to move well, and let strength be what you build on top of it.

Load is a tool that gets added slowly once the movement is sound, and it can be light to begin with. What keeps a young athlete safe is not the equipment. It is proper instruction, real supervision, and load scaled to the individual child.
